Pep Band info & more
What is Pep Band?
Pep band is essentially our basketball band that plays at 6-8 games each year. Their job is to help bring energy and a sense of school community to these public events. We very often get positive comments from opposing parents, coaches and even the refs!
When does Pep Band meet?
In order to allow students to prioritize academics and other things, we only perform on Friday evening games, typically in January and February though there can be an oddball day (Thursday, Saturday) once in a while. We split our games evenly between boys and girls teams – for both pregame starts at 7 and actual games start at 7:30. We release students at halftime (around 8:15-8:30) and all students are required to participate in half of the scheduled games (typically 3-4). If either team does well enough to get a home playoff game it will be offered as extra credit.
What will they play?
Students already have the music they will play from football season in their flip folders – we only practice right before games since the music is easier.
What about students who do not play “peppy” instruments?
Concert instruments such as bassoon and oboe can either choose to play their instrument (oboes can read flute music and bassoon can read trombone music) or pick up a pair of cymbals, a shaker or other simple percussion instrument.
What is needed for Pep Band?
All students must have and wear the long-sleeved pep band shirt in order to get credit for their performance. Also required are a lyre, flip book and music which they should already have.
What if absence is unavoidable?
Students who must miss a scheduled game must inform the director, then switch with someone in the opposite band they are in both to make up their absence as well as have someone cover their spot to maintain good instrumentation. If a switch cannot be found, students must let the director know and then show up to an opposite band game for credit.
Can a student play in more than their assigned games?
Yes! We have a number of students each year who truly enjoy creating energy with their fellow musicians and come to most or all of the games regardless of where they were assigned. The more the merrier!!
